LAFAYETTE, La. – Head coach Greg Harkins announced a balanced schedule for the 2013-14 season on Tuesday as the Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team looks to improve upon its 14-12 mark a season ago.
"We have a regional schedule this fall that will give us time to develop and bond as a team," Harkins said. "Our returners will get to show how they have improved and the new players will get the opportunity to adjust to our system and the surroundings of their new environment."
Louisiana opens the season on Sept. 20-22 at the UNO Big Easy Invitational in New Orleans, La. The Cajuns host their only fall tournament, The UL Invitational, from Oct. 4-5 at Cajun Courts before closing out the fall at The Northwestern Invitational (Oct. 11-12) and the Southern Miss Invitational (Oct. 25-26).
"Our goal during the fall is to train hard and compete as well as possible to prepare for the dual match season in the spring," Harkins added. "Our annual tournament will be the first weekend in October. We will have a strong field of state and regional teams committed to the event. It's a great tournament and a wonderful time for fans and family to come out and support the program."
The squad opens a competitive spring slate on Feb. 1 at home against Jackson State, one of nine home matches for the Ragin' Cajuns in 2014.
Other home matches include Alcorn State (Feb. 12), Xavier, La. (Feb. 12), Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (Feb. 18), Southeastern Louisiana. (Feb. 19), Stephen F. Austin (March 7), Southern Miss (March 8), North Florida (March 10) and Louisiana Tech (March 15).
"We open the dual season at home on Feb. 1, which will be a combined event with the men's program versus Jackson State," Harkins mentioned. "We have a balanced schedule, which includes some of the top teams in the state, region and nation. In-state programs Northwestern State (2013 Southland Conference Tournament Champions), Southeastern (2013 Southland Regular Season Champions) and Louisiana Tech (Conference USA with a top ranked recruiting class) are on the schedule."
The Cajuns have 12 road matches on the schedule for the spring including contests at conference foes Texas State (Feb. 9), Arkansas State (Feb. 15), South Alabama (March 28), Troy (March 29) and ULM (April 4).
"We play nationally-ranked teams North Florida, College of Charleston and ETSU," Harkins noted. "Sunbelt Conference rivals South Alabama, ULM, Troy, Texas State and Arkansas State round out a solid schedule for the ladies in 2014.
"Our goals are to challenge for a conference championship and grab a spot within the top 75 of the ITA rankings. Our squad is young and hungry to improve on the success from last season and this schedule will push us to be the best we can. We have tremendous support from the community and the administration and look forward to seeing everyone at the Cajun Courts."
