LAFAYETTE, La. – The Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team will look to build off of a successful 2013 spring season as Louisiana added to its depth with the signing of Julie Cremers and Nelo Phiri to national letters of intent for the upcoming 2013-14 season, head coach Greg Harkins announced on Thursday.
Phiri comes to the Cajuns from Tyler Junior College. Prior to her time at Tyler, Nelo was one of the top players in the country gaining a five star rating and a national ranking of No. 34 by Tennisrecruitng.net. During her time at Tyler JC, Phiri helped the Apache win two national team titles and a national doubles title. The Yonkers, N.Y. native has competed at the highest levels of tennis obtaining an ITF junior world ranking of No. 254 and WTA world ranking of No. 1088.
“This is an exciting time for the program,” Harkins said. “We were fortunate to be in the right place at the right time to offer Nelo a position on the team. She is a seasoned veteran who knows how to handle the pressures of high-level tennis. Her experience adds credibility to a young squad that returns almost everyone from last year's line up.”
Cremers hails from Wanssum Limburg, Netherlands and will join the squad as a freshman. Julie reached a national ranking of No. 74 in the competitive Dutch system. She will look to major in business.
“Julie is an experienced player with a lot of matches under her belt,” Harkins mentioned. “She will be a nice addition not only on the court, but also in the classroom. For a player like Julie, this is a great opportunity to grow and have success. Julie understands the team dynamic and is excited to be part of the program.
“These ladies are two more pieces of the puzzle. Their work ethic, desire and commitment to the Ragin' Cajuns family will help us contend for conference championships and national rankings. We have made up a lot of ground in the last few seasons, and I believe Nelo and Julie along with the rest of the team have good energy and want to challenge themselves and the program. It's a great time to be a Cajun!”
