WEST POINT, Miss. – In their last regular season action of the season, the Ragin' Cajuns golf team sits in 11th place after 36 holes on the first day of the Old Waverly Collegiate Championships in West Point, Mississippi.
“This team is better than our performance today,” head Coach Theo Silman said. “We started off flat. Struggled to finish off our rounds and find ourselves in a mediocre position. Besides a couple of solid rounds we certainly did not receive the contribution from the collective group that we need to in order to be competitive. I fully expect all five guys to bounce back in our final round of regular season play.”
Senior Ethan Savoy, a Lafayette native, leads the Cajuns after the first day, posting back-to-back 74's, finishing the day four-over par and in a three-way tie for 26th place.
Freshman Ross Davis is the only Cajun to finish a round even-or-better, shooting a 72 in the first round and followed it up with a 78 in the second round. The Baton Rouge, La. native finished the day six-over par and in a five-way tie for 33rd place.
As a team, the Cajuns posted a two-round score of 28-over par (604), seven strokes behind in-state foe, Louisiana Tech for 10th place.
No. 28, and host, Mississippi State is the top team after day one, shooting one-under par, just one stroke ahead of UAB (576), the only other team to shoot par-or-below. No. 48 South Alabama (582), Southern Miss (589) and Southeastern Louisiana (590) round out the rest of the top five teams after the first day.
Cincinnati's Emerson Newsome leads the individual chase, shooting six-under par after the first day, posting a 67 and 71 (138) after the first 36 holes. His 67 in the first round is the low score of the tournament, thus far.
The final round begins at 8:30 tomorrow morning on holes one and 10. The Cajuns are paired with Louisiana Tech and Rice, all starting on the tenth hole.
