WHAT'S ON TAP? The Cajuns return to conference action to take on Middle Tennessee State in their fifth conference series of the season. The Cajuns are 8-4 in conference play this season and 27-11 overall and currently in the middle of a seven-game homestand.
CAJUN UPDATE: The 27-11 Cajuns are coming off an offensive outburst against Southern Miss on Wednesday, April 10 at Lamson Park. The Cajuns won the doubleheader by scores of 18-2 and 10-0, smacking eight home runs on the day. They tied an NCAA record with five home runs hit in an inning, achieving the feat in the fourth inning of the first game.
THE BLUE RAIDERS: The Blue Raiders are 5-34 on the season and 1-13 in Sun Belt play, defeating Troy on March 6. They are coming off of a split doubleheader against Evansvillle, winning 5-2 and losing 7-0 in the nightcap. They are led by Laura Dukes offensively. Dukes is batting a team high .280 with seven home runs and 15 RBI. They are led in the circle by Jordyn Fisherback. Fisherback is 3-16 with a 5.19 ERA in 112.0 innings pitched. The Cajuns swept last years series in Murfreesboro by scores of 8-0, 9-1 and 4-3.
ONE FOR THE RECORD BOOKS: In the first game of the Cajuns' doubleheader against Southern Miss, the Cajuns tied one NCAA record and reached several Ragin' Cajuns Softball Records. As for NCAA records, the Cajuns tied the record for most home runs in an inning (5), and individually, most home runs in an inning (Landry, 2). Landry also tied a Ragin' Cajuns record for most total bases in a game with 13, and most home runs in a game with three. It was the third time in Ragin' Cajuns history that they hit six home runs in a game, the last time was also against Southern Miss, on April 4, 2006.
SWEEPING THE SUN BELT AWARDS: After helping lead the Ragin' Cajuns softball team to a three-game sweep of North Texas, shortstop Nerissa Myers and pitcher Jordan Wallace have been named the Sun Belt Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. Myers went 6-for-9 at the plate with eight RBI and three home runs, including a grand slam, and Wallace picked up 32 strikeouts over 14.0 shutout-innings. This marks the third and fourth time this season a member of the Ragin' Cajuns has received the award.
WALLACE KEEPS FANNING THEM: Sophomore pitcher Jordan Wallace struck out ten batters in four innings pitching in game one against North Texas. She struck out 10-of-12 possible putouts before yielding to the bullpen. In 14.0 innings against North Texas, she struck out 32 batters, including a career-high 16 on Sunday in a complete-game shutout. She has now fanned a career-high 193 batters. As of April 8th, averaged 10.3 strikeouts every seven innings, which ranks 13th and 9th in the nation, respectively.
HAACK ATTACK: Matte Haack hit her first career multi-homer game on Saturday in game one against North Texas, finishing the game 3-for-3 with two homers, three RBI and three runs scored. She hit a two-run homer in the first inning, before following it up with a solo shot in the fifth inning. She now has seven home runs on the season, two shy of her career-high.
WELCOME BACK NERISSA MYERS: In her first at-bat back from a five-week layoff with an ankle injury, Nerissa Myers hit a lead off home run in game one of the North Texas series. Her offensive onslaught didn't stop there, however. She doubled in a run in her next at bat before hitting a grand slam in her fourth at bat of the game. She followed that up with a home run in game two of the doubleheader and knocked in eight runs on the day.
DRIVING THEM IN: Three Cajuns rank in the top five in runs batted in the Sun Belt Conference. Shellie Landry reclaimed the conference lead over the weekend and now has 45 on the season, Sarah Draheim sits in second with 41 and Brianna Cherry is tied for fifth in the conference with 31 runs batted in. As of Monday, April 8, Landry is 25th in the nation with 1.14 RBI/Game.
WALLACE IN THE SUN BELT: Sophomore pitcher Jordan Wallace holds a 6-2 record with a 2.02 ERA and 88 strikeouts in conference games this season. In her career, she is 17-3 with a 1.86 ERA and 171 strikeouts against conference foes.
RUNS PER GAME: With 266 runs scored this season the Cajuns are atop the Sun Belt leader board. As of Monday, April 8, they ranked 17th in the nation with 6.52 runs per game as of March 31.
WHAT A WEEKEND: Freshman Sara Corbello had a banner series against FIU on the weekend of March 29-30. She led the weekend off with a career-high four RBI performance going 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in game one, before matching her new career best, with her first career grand slam on Saturday in the finale.
FIRST-YEAR FOCUS: With three freshmen in the starting lineup for every game this season, the future is bright for the Cajuns. Shellie Landry, Sara Corbello and Samantha Walsh have had a strong impact on the team in their first year of competition, combining for 19 HR and 98 RBI. First-year players as a whole are batting .302 on the season (120-for-398) with 98 RBI, 22 HR, and 81 runs scored. Last season a veteran Cajuns squad didn't send a freshman to the plate.
HOME RUNS...HOME RUNS EVERYWHERE: The Cajuns have hit 53 home runs on the season and lead the Sun Belt Conference. As a team, the Cajuns rank 15th in the nation in home runs per game with 1.25. Individually, the Cajuns have three batters in the top six in the conference, leader Shellie Landry has 11, Sarah Draheim is second with 10, and Matte Haack is tied for fourth with eight.
DOMINATING THE DISH: Senior catcher Sarah Draheim has been a huge presence both behind and at the plate for the Cajuns this season. She leads the team with 261 putouts, and has started every game at catcher. She is batting .415 on the season and is second on the team and conference behind Shellie Landry, with 41 RBI and 10 home runs. Draheim batted .250 in her first three seasons.
LET'S GET IT STARTED: The Cajuns have scored in the first inning in 22-of-38 games this season, and are 17-5 in those games. The Cajuns have scored first in 30-of-38 games and hold a record of 23-7 when scoring first.
