WHAT'S ON TAP? The Cajuns are back in action with a three-game conference series against FIU at Lamson Park with a doubleheader on Friday March 29 at 4:00 P.M. and a single game on Saturday March 30 at 11:00 A.M. The Cajuns are 2-4 in conference play this season with three games against WKU and South Alabama.
CAJUN UPDATE: With their last game played on March 17, the Cajuns are coming off what will be a 11-day hiatus from games on March 29 when they take on FIU. In their last game action, the Cajuns dropped a weekend series with South Alabama 1-2, with a 2-1 victory coming on Sunday to avoid the sweep.
THE PANTHERS: The Panthers are coming off of three straight home losses to South Alabama, dropping games by scores of 11-5, 10-0 and 8-5 over the weekend. With eight conference games under their belt, they hold a 4-4 record in conference play and a 21-16 record overall. In the circle, the Panthers are led by freshman Corinne Jenkins. Jenkins leads the team with an 11-3 record with a 2.64 ERA and 87 strikeouts in 98.0 innings. Offensively they are led by freshman catcher Aleima Lopez. Lopez is batting .287 with a team high 25 RBI and 30 hits, with three home runs.
A FEW DAYS OFF: With 11 days of no games, the Cajuns are coming off of the longest break between games since the 2003 season when they had 12 days between games. In 2003, the Cajuns faced then-ranked #6 Oklahoma on March 14 and lost 1-0, and came off their break with a 2-0 victory over #16 Alabama on March 27th.
STRIKING OUT THE NATION: After a season-high 15 strikeouts in a seven inning outing against South Alabama on Sunday, March 17th, Jordan Wallace now ranks 16th in the nation with 9.6 strikeouts per seven innings. She has fanned 138 batters in 110.1 innings this season, last year she struck out 167 batters in 186.0 innings, which is 6.28 strikeouts per seven innings.
FIRST-YEAR FOCUS: With three freshmen in the starting lineup for every game this season, the future is bright for the Cajuns. Shellie Landry, Sara Corbello and Samantha Walsh have had a strong impact on the team in their first year of competition, combining for 10 HR and 60 RBI. First-year players as a whole are batting .288 on the season (90-for-312) with 64 RBI, 11 HR, and 55 runs scored. Last season a veteran Cajuns squad didn't send a freshman to the plate.
CHERRY BOMBS: Senior center fielder Brianna Cherry has anchored the Cajuns' offense through the first 30 games this season. She is batting .386 with 28 RBI, and a team-high 32 runs and seven home runs. Her seven home runs tie her career high that she set last season.
HOME RUNS...HOME RUNS EVERYWHERE: Through their first 30 games, the Ragin' Cajuns lead the Sun Belt in home runs with 32, three ahead of South Alabama. Individually, Sarah Draheim is tied for the conference lead (Hannah Renn, Troy) at eight home runs, and Brianna Cherry and Shellie Landry are in a four-way tie for second in the conference with seven each.
DOMINATING THE DISH: Senior catcher Sarah Draheim has been a huge presence both behind and at the plate for the Cajuns this season. She leads the team with 195 putouts, and has started every game at catcher. She is batting .398 on the season and leads the conference with eight home runs and 34 RBI. Draheim batted .250 in her first three seasons.
LET'S GET IT STARTED: The Cajuns have scored in the first inning in 16-of-30 games this season, and are 11-5 in those games. The Cajuns have scored first in 23-of-30 games and hold a record of 16-7 when scoring first.
WATERMAN OFF THE WALL: In just her fourth career at-bat, senior Megan Waterman doubled off the left field wall, missing a home run by mere feet on Friday, February 15. On Saturday, February 16th she would get another pinch hitting opportunity, this time clearing the wall for her first career home run.
DEFENDING CHAMPS: Louisiana will attempt to defend their throne at the top of the Sun Belt Conference, a spot they have held in 11 of the past 12 seasons, including five straight. They will also attempt to extend a streak of 14 straight NCAA Regional tournament berths.
FAMILY AFFAIR: The Cajuns have two family links on the team, seniors Nerissa Myers and Brianna Cherry are cousins, and senior Matte Haack has a younger brother, Brooks, who is a freshman on the Ragin' Cajuns football team.
SOLID COMPETITION: The Cajuns schedule features eight teams that were either ranked in the top 25 or received votes in NCAA polls, including number one, Oklahoma (April 3rd). They have gone 1-5 when facing teams in the Top 25 and are 0-4 against Top 10 ranked teams.
CLEARING THE BENCH: 29 different players have seen time at the plate or on the base paths this season for the Cajuns. In all of 2012, just 12 players saw action in the field, not including pitchers.
LOVING LOUISIANA: The 2013 schedule features six teams from inside the Louisiana Border. McNeese State, Southern, Louisiana Tech and UL-Monroe. The Cajuns are 4-0 thus far against in-state opponents with victories over McNeese and Southern already.
