LAFAYETTE, La. – With Terrance Broadway and Jamal Robinson leading the way, the Ragin' Cajuns offense scored on its first possession and never let up to claim a victory of the Louisiana defense on Saturday afternoon in the first scrimmage of the spring practice season.

After two weeks of almost ideal weather for spring practice, the skies were grey over the Acadiana and the two-hour, 105-play scrimmage was played at times in a light rain on a wet Cajun Field.

“I thought the offense really stood out today,” third-year head coach Mark Hudspeth said.

“Not only did they continually move the ball, but they did so without a turnover.  We didn't have any fumbles, not even a bobble.  We had perfect ball security.”

Broadway set the tone early, finding receiver Adam Savoie open down the left sidelines for a 65-yard touchdown on the first series of the scrimmage.

Broadway, who played most of the first half of the scrimmage, was sharp, later added a three-yard scoring toss to Ian Thompson.

Robinson, who played with the first unit with Broadway at the helm, caught touchdown passes of 70 and 65 yards as part of his afternoon.

"We saw what Jamal was capable of doing when we needed him and I look forward to even better things this year from him."

The remainder of the afternoon was left to D'Shaie Landor, Brooks Haack and Jalen Nixon, the trio of redshirt freshmen quarterbacks who are each competing for the backup quarterback slot this fall.

Each had their moments, Landor and Haack each threw a pair of touchdown passes while Nixon had one.

After the scrimmage, Hudspeth was certain that neither quarterback had either taken over the position or played themselves out of it.

“Brooks made some things happen when he was in there today, but so did D'Shaie and Jalen,” Hudspeth said.  “I thought all three did a nice job leading the team, despite the less than ideal weather.  It will be good to look at the film of this scrimmage.”

“We had the blue jersey (no contact) on Broadway today, but let the three freshman play live so that we could see what they really can do when they are in a position to take a hit.”

Hudspeth was understandably concerned about the play of the defense, which took to the field for the first time under defensive coordinator James Willis.

“The tempo of the practice was slow because we were able to get a lot of guys on the field and try them out in a number of positions, which was good.

“This is a new defensive scheme that used today and it is going to take a little time to get to the point where our defenders are able to react before they think.  That will only come with repetition and practice.

“My concern today defensively is that we didn't create any plays.  We didn't force any fumble or make any interceptions, but we did let up a couple of big plays.  I know that we have the guys to make this defense work,” Hudspeth added.

With first team all-Sun Belt honoree Brett Baer gone, the scrimmage also served as the first opportunity for the punters and the kickers to show their stuff in a live.

As Hudspeth said at the start of spring ball, junior Daniel Cadona appears to be in the lead to handle the punting chores.  He kicked a half-dozen times during the session, displaying good distance and excellent hang time.

Hudspeth said after the practice that junior Hunter Stover in is the lead at kicker with sophomore transfer Stephen Brauchle and junior Carlos Alvarez close behind.

“The competition for the position has helped all three of those guys to be playing their best right now,” Hudspeth said.

The scrimmage marked the seventh of 15 practices this spring for the Cajuns.  Louisiana will practice again on Monday (March 25) and Thursday (March 28) before taking a 10-day break for the traditional spring break at the university.
