STARKVILLE, Miss. – After taking a one-point lead early in the second half, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team fell to Mississippi State, 78-51, on Wednesday at Humphrey Coliseum.

It was a tale of two halves for the Ragin' Cajuns (4-3).  Trailing by just one point after the first 20 minutes, the Bulldogs outscored Louisiana, 50-24, in the second half while shooting 46.6 percent to earn the win.

"I thought we played pretty well in the first half," head coach Garry Brodhead said.  "They went on runs but we were able to stay in the game and shutdown their best player [Martha Alwal]."

Jaylyn Gordon was the lone Cajun to reach double digits, scoring 10 points to lead Louisiana.  Dominique Dillingham led the Bulldogs with 19 points, while Alwal chipped in with a double-double, scoring 14 and picking up 14 rebounds.

After shooting 1-of-6 in the first five minutes, the Cajuns picked up the offensive pressure, hitting 9-of-25 shots for the rest of the half.  Mississippi State would have the inverse, starting the game hitting 3-of-7 (42.9%) from the field before going 6-for-26 (23.1%) from then on out.

The Cajuns made the best of their strong shooting down the stretch, going on an 11-2 run to finish the half trailing by just one, 28-27.

"I think we played more aggressive in the press," Brodhead said of the first half finish.  "We were pushing the ball up the court and hitting shots.  I was impressed with how organized we played in the first half, and the 11-2 run showed how we can play."

Free throws would be the difference in the first half, with the Bulldogs going to the line 17 times and hitting 10, compared to the Cajuns' seven trips and four points.

Louisiana would draw first blood in the second half, with Keke Veal hitting a lay up to put the Cajuns up, 29-28, for their first lead up the game.

The Bulldogs answered the Cajuns lead, using a 14-2 run in the next 3:36 to take a 44-31 lead with 15:03 remaining in the game.

The Cajuns responded with two made free throws each for Veal and Gabby Alexander, leading to another run for the MSU.  The Bulldogs scored the next 12 points, starting a 16-4 run, to take a 62-39 lead.

Mississippi State continued to shoot the ball well from the field and the line while holding the Cajuns to 7-for-33 aim in the second half. The Bulldogs outscored the Cajuns 50-24 in the second half, shooting 13-of-28 (46 percent) from the floor and 22-of-27 (82 percent) from the free throw line.

"We didn't give ourselves the opportunity to guard 5-on-5," Brodhead said.  "We turned the ball over too much and that put us at a disadvantage with them shooting the ball so well."

The Cajuns finished the game shooting 17-of-64 (26.6 percent) from the field and 4-of-25 (16 percent) from behind the 3-point line.

Keke Veal scored nine points for the Cajuns before fouling out with 8:36 remaining in the game. Braile Fields and Sylvana Okde had seven points apiece for Louisiana while Adrienne Prejean scored six points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.

The Cajuns will continue their three-game road trip with on Saturday when it faces Louisiana Tech on Saturday. Louisiana will then have a week off for final exams before wrapping up its road trip on Dec. 14 when it faces former Sun Belt Conference opponent New Orleans.
