PENSACOLA , Fla. – Sophomore Jake Wynan highlighted the action on day two of the USTA Pensacola Futures with a win in the second round at the Roger Scott Tennis Center.
Wynan bested Lukas Clemens of Germany in straight sets, 6-1, 7-6(5), to advance to the third round. The Australian product is slated to face the 14th seed Roberto Cid of the Dominican Republic tomorrow.
"Jake started quickly again going up 6-1, but this was due in part to his opponent," head coach Mark Jeffrey said. "His opponent started the match very slowly and with a lot of errors. Clemens picked up his game and the second set and made it a real tussle. I wouldn't say that Jake played a great second set, but it was enough to win. Jake will have to raise his game in the next match if he wants to move forward. His next opponent's level is considerably higher than the guy Jake played today."
Also in action on day two was senior Carl Alberton and junior Damian Farinola. Alberton fell to Romanian Andrei Crapcenco in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.
"I would say Carl would be disappointed in today's performance and result," Jeffrey mentioned. "It is unusual for Carl to be inconsistent, but that is what happened today. He couldn't find the rhythm on his forehand, which definitely hurt him. For Carl to move forward he has to commit to the forehand with racket head speed, and learn to control the ball with spin but needs to have racket head speed and feel at the same time"
Farinola was also knocked from the tournament by Ilya Vasilyev of Russia after dropping a 6-2, 7-6(5) decision.
"Damian let the second set slip away from him," Jeffrey stated. "He put himself in a good position to win the set at 5-4 on serve. He also was up 5-3 in the tiebreaker. Damian changed his game style in the second set and became much more aggressive with the backhand pattern which helped him stay neutral and ahead in the point. Unfortunately, some key errors at the wrong time cost him the second set. I give credit to his opponent who stayed loose and came up with the big shots at key times."
