BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Sophomore twins Hunter and Yates Johnson had a successful first day at the Birmingham futures as the pair moved on to the second round of qualifying in singles at the Highland Park Tennis Center.
Hunter Johnson defeated Jack Oswald of Great Britain in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, to move on to the second day of qualifying, while Yates Johnson battled to take a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 decision from Alexandru Gasca-Silav of Romania.
"Hunter came out very strong from the beginning of the match and stuck to the game plan hitting to the backhand relentlessly until the forehand side opened up," volunteer assistant coach Jeff Johnson said. "Hitting behind players on green clay is very effective which both guys did. Yates played a tall guy who eventually wore down after splitting the first to sets to dominate the third set.
"The twins are being very patient on the clay and choosing their opportunities wisely. You have to do that on the clay. They both also attacked a lot, which also works. I look for them to play at a higher level in the next match."
The pair resume action today in singles qualifying and have already qualified for the doubles main draw which starts on Tuesday.
