Women’s Tennis Opens 2012 Season at Auburn Invite

LAFAYETTE, La. – The Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team gets its 2012-13 campaign underway this weekend as the squad heads to Auburn, Ala. for the Auburn Invitational. The two-day event is scheduled to take place all day on Friday and Saturday.

“It's an honor to take part in a tournament that has so many great teams from the region,” head coach Greg Harkins said. “The girls have been working hard and I know they are anxious to get back on the courts. Each time we play in a tournament like this we are looking to improve each match out. Hopefully this will be a great learning experience.”

Matches will take place at the Yarbrough Tennis Center in Auburn, Ala. with action starting at 9 a.m. both days.

Auburn, Mississippi State, Tulane, Northwestern State, Lamar, Houston, Georgia Southern, UT Chattanooga and Kennesaw State make up the field at the Auburn Invitational.

Two rounds of singles and one round of doubles are set for Friday, followed by one singles and two doubles rounds on Saturday.

The Cajuns return three starters from the 2011-12 season including Sophie van den Aarssen, Hannah Appleyard and Sandra Ahlqvist.

Van den Aarssen is the top returner after posting an 8-11 record during the spring season including wins in three of her last five matches.

Newcomers Eleanor Bradshaw, Nicole Breaux, Melissa Burckhartt, Juliette Clement and Bailey Vandyke will be making their first appearance in a Cajuns uniform at the Auburn Invite.
