Countdown To Kickoff 2012: Day Two Practice
Day two of spring practice for the UL football team drew rave reviews from head coach Mark Hudspeth after the Ragin' Cajuns came ready to play, a significant improvement from the Thursday.
At least for the veterans. The newcomers were not as impressive, which was not unexpected.
With the squad split in two for practice for the second straight day, the majority of the veterans were on the Cajun Field turf for a 2:15 minute practice that featured the tempo and intensity that you usually expect to find much further into preseason.
“We practiced big time today,” Hudspeth said after the morning session. “We came into the practice with the mindset that we were going to be better today than we were yesterday and it showed.
“We are still very early in the process of teaching our guys the game plan for the year,” Hudspeth said. “In the first two days, we haven't installed anything new into either the offense or defense. That will come in the next week or so. For now, they need to go over the basics of our schemes and what we put in during spring practice.”
“It is good to see our guys practice at the level that we expect them to, especially since it is so early in camp. I think part of our problem yesterday was that the coaching staff didn't take the right state of mind to practice and it carried over to the team. We changed that today.”
The afternoon practice was a little different.
With the team split in two, the sessions took the same tone as day one when the veterans used the time to adjust to the conditioning and refresh themselves with the basics of the playbook. The afternoon practice was another day of Cajun Football 101 for the newcomers, allowing them to know where they should be and what they should expect from a normal practice.
“The younger guys are in the process of learning what is expected, and it showed” Hudspeth said. “We spent the afternoon educating and orientating them to how we do things and what is expected. This happens every year because it takes them time to get adjusted. They will really get their eyes opened when the whole team practices together.”
Cajun Football 101 is over however as on Saturday, all 105 team members will practice together on the practice field for the first time.
Saturday's practice should have a different look and feel.
“When we split into two groups and only have 50-55 guys on the field, our players get more reps and less time to rest and that will help them get into better game shape. Tomorrow, we'll concentrate on speeding things up and get practice running at the pace we expect.”
LAGNIAPE: Hudspeth singled out the play of quarterback Blaine Gautier and receiver Javone Lawson during the morning session. . . “Javone sure showed today why so many people have been paying attention to him this summer. He had another great day.”. . . despite his overall unhappiness with the newcomers, Hudspeth was impressed by the play of freshmen Remaine Douglas (DL), safety Christian Hill and Mississippi transfer safety T.J. Worthy. . . the Cajuns took advantage of cooler weather conditions on Friday as mostly cloudy skies and a consistent breeze cooled things down, allowing both practices to take on a better flow. . . this was the second straight day that practice was held in Cajun Field, something that will change starting on Saturday when practice moves to the practice field. . . the only remaining practices slated for Cajun Field are when the team scrimmages during the preseason or inclement weather forces them either inside the Moncla Indoor Facility or over to Cajun Field. . . with the start of practice, the 2012 football guide is now available online while the schedule tags were delivered and are available to fans by either stopping by the UL area on Saturday at the Acadiana Mall or by visiting the Cox Communication Center starting on Monday. . . while the football team practiced, a number of the other UL student-athletes were promoting their upcoming seasons at the mall, passing out posters and schedule tags.
