LAFAYETTE, La. – The Ragin' Cajuns golf team will make its first appearance in the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships since 2007 as the Cajuns were selected to the UNC Greensboro Regional, the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Committee announced on Monday evening.
“I can't be more proud of these guys,” head coach Theo Sliman said. “This is all about them. They have worked their tales off this year. I've been very fortunate to coach the two seniors we have. They have given this team everything they have in their four years.
“It was great to see the look on the guys faces when they saw the selection. A goal of this team at the start of the year was to make nationals. You have to make it to regionals to make it to nationals, so we still have some work to do to achieve our goal.”
Louisiana will tee off from May 17-19 at the UNC Greensboro Regional which will be hosted at the Grandover Resort East Course in Greensboro, N.C. The field includes Auburn, UNLV, Florida, Duke, Indiana, Liberty, SMU, Texas Tech, Tulsa, Lamar, Charlotte, George Washington and Mount St. Mary's.
The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals. The finals will be conducted May 29-June 3, at The Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California. Southern California is the host institution for this year's championships.
“I like our chances,” Sliman added. “I still believe our best golf is ahead of us. That has been the message all spring. I was very fortunate to play in a regional as a player at UL. Hopefully my experience as a player can help the team. I feel like this team can make it to nationals. We have a lot of maturity on this team and a ton of experience.”
Seniors Philipp Fendt and Andrew Noto each have NCAA postseason experience as Fendt has made appearances in two regionals, while Noto was selected to last years regional in Ocala, Fla.
“Both Andrew and Philipp have tasted what a regional is all about,” Sliman said. “I specifically remember the two of them in Ocala saying that this is nice, but it would be better if we had the whole team here. Its very neat to see that come to fruition. As hard as those two have worked to help carry the team to the NCAA tournament, it is a very special thing.”
The Cajuns are coming off of a third place finish as the Sun Belt Conference Championship. UL had three members selected to the Sun Belt All-Conference team including Fendt, Noto and Brandt Garon.
