2012 Sun Belt Conference Softball Championship Central
LAFAYETTE, La. -- For a fifth consecutive season, the Ragin' Cajuns earned the top seed in the 2012 Sun Belt Conference Softball Championship after securing its 11th SBC regular season title in the league's 12-year history. Louisiana will look to defend their conference tournament title May 9-12 at the FAU Softball Stadium in Boca Raton, Fla.
UL clinched the No. 1 overall seed after finishing at the top of the conference standings with a 46-3 overall record, including a 21-3 mark in league play. This season marks the 11th time in the last 12 years that the Cajuns are the top seed in the Sun Belt tournament, with the 2007 season being the only season the Cajuns did not earn the No. 1 overall seed and the only year the team did not win the conference tournament. The Cajuns have won 11 of the last 12 SBC championships.
The Ragin' Cajuns will face No. 8 Florida Atlantic (15-37, 5-18 SBC) at 6:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday, May 9 in the opening round of the tournament. The Cajuns swept the Owls at home earlier in the season, outscoring FAU, 40-3 in the series.
The SBC will use the same format as last year for the tournament which emulates the College World Series bracket. The loser of games seven and eight will switch sides of the bracket to play through the loser's bracket. The SBC tournament differs from the CWS bracket in that the SBC championship game is single elimination whereas the CWS championship round is the best two-out-of-three.
As the host institution, FAU reserved the right to choose the time of its first round game and chose to play in the 6:30 p.m. time slot. Conference policy states the host institution can choose the time of their first round games only.
Championship festivities begin on Tuesday, May 8 at 7 p.m. ET with the Championship Family Night celebration. This annual event honors student-athletes for their performance on the field and in the classroom while providing several family-friendly activities throughout the night, including a student-athlete home run derby and fireworks show. Gates open at 5:45 p.m. and the event is free and open to the public.
Softball action will start on Wednesday, May 9, with the opening game's first pitch slated for 11 a.m. ET.
