LAFAYETTE – Ragin' Cajuns head volleyball coach Heather Mazeitis-Fontenot recently added a pair of players from the international volleyball landscape during the NCAA spring signing period.
Both Katie Adamson, a 5-11 middle blocker from Nelson, New Zealand, and Maret Randpold, a 6-0 outside hitter from Parnu, Estonia, signed national letters of intent to play for Louisiana starting in the fall of 2012.
Adamson graduated from Waimea College in November 2011. She was a member of the Waimea College senior A volleyball team that placed 3rd at the national secondary schools tournament.
Adamson also played for the New Zealand U19 junior woman's team that competed in the USA high performance championships in Tucson, Ariz., last year. She was also selected to the New Zealand secondary schools team and South Island secondary schools team.
Adamson made her first appearance on the New Zealand U19 junior woman's squad in 2010 when the team travelled to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam to attend the Asian Junior championships.
“Katie very much reminds me of Lesley Mirarchi in her speed along the net and her desire to stay in the play,” Mazeitis-Fontenot said. “Lesley left a big hole to fill, and I think that Katie will definitely help to fill that. She is a competitor and an experienced player.
“We are very happy to have her join us this fall. Katie is also an experienced sand player and we are hoping to add that as an official sport soon.”
Randpold comes to UL from Audentese Spordikool in Parnu, Estonia. She is a member of the Estonian national team.
“Maret is a terminator in every sense of the word,” Mazeitis-Fontenot said. “She can finish a point from the left or right side. She is very mature and is looking forward to the challenge of moving here and experiencing all that being a student-athlete at UL has to offer.
“Both young women are very good students and have the ability to contribute right away.”
The Ragin' Cajuns volleyball team will be entering the fifth season of the Heather Mazeitis-Fontenot era in the fall of 2012. The squad reports for preseason drills in August and opens the 2012 season Friday-Saturday, Aug. 24-25 at the Sam Houston State Invitational in Huntsville, Texas.
Mazeitis-Fontenot has guided the Cajuns to consecutive double digit win totals for the first time since the 2001-02 seasons. The 31 victories accrued the past two seasons combined (2010 & 2011) are the most since the program notched 32 between the 1999 and 2000 season.
