Lawson Grabs Three TD's To Lead White Past Red, 25-19

LAFAYETTE, La. – Javonne Lawson caught three touchdown passes, including two from Terrance Broadway, and the White team defense held tough in the fourth quarter, stopping a potential go-ahead scoring drive in the final minutes, as the White team claimed a 25-19 victory in the annual Red vs. White spring game on Saturday at Cajun Field.

The game officially brought to a close the annual spring practice season for the UL football team, which will now focus on conditioning and the weight room before opening fall camp in early August.

“I saw two teams out there today who were fighting to win,” head coach Mark Hudspeth said.  “I thought both squads started out a little slowly, but after a series or two, the offenses got into a rhythm and started to show what they could do.

“The Red team didn't do as much offensively as I thought they could, but when the game was on the line in the fourth quarter, they created an opportunity to win the game.”

With the White team ahead, 25-12, following a Carlos Alvarez 30-yard field goal with 3:10 left in the fourth quarter, the Red squad came to life.

Senior quarterback Blane Gautier, who completed 19-of-40 passes for 181 yards and two scores with three interceptions, threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Montrel Carter as part of a 77-yard scoring drive that pulled the Red to within 25-19 with 1:46 left.

On the ensuing kickoff, senior Brett Baer perfectly executed an onside kick, recovering itself, to give the Red squad a chance with 1:46 left.  After an 11-yard Gautier pass to Darryl Surgent that moved the ball into White territory, the White defense buckled down.  Christian Ringo sacked Gautier for a six yard loss on third down at the White 43 and on a fourth down play, freshman Kevin Fouquier hit Gautier as he was throwing, forced the ball to go off target and give the ball back to the Red squad.

The Red team then ran the clock down to 11 seconds before turning it back to the White squad and unlike the well documented drive in New Orleans last December, Gautier did not have enough time to pull out the win.

Broadway, a sophomore transfer from Houston who becomes eligible to play after sitting out the 2011 season, completed 10-of-18 passes for 184 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Red offense.

The day however belonged to Lawson, who last season became just the fifth receiver in school history to catch passes for more than 1,000 yards in a season.  He caught a six-yard scoring pass from Broadway with 1:43 left in the first quarter to put the White squad ahead for good and then hauled in a 50-yard scoring pass from fellow wide receiver Harry Peoples to put the White ahead, 15-2, midway through the second quarter.

“Our receivers really showed what they are capable of doing,” Hudspeth said.  “Javone did a nice job of finding the seams in the defense and then making a couple of tough grabs to get into the end zone.”

Athough the Red finished strong, the first half belonged to the White team.

The Red squad took a 2-1 lead to open the game by claiming two of the three bouts in the pregame Oklahoma drill, which took place at midfield.  The drill has been a staple of the Ragin' Cajuns contact practices during the spring and Hudspeth incorporated it into the spring game.

Both offenses started slowly, but the White took an 8-2 lead at the 1:43 mark when Terrance Broadway completed a six yard pass to Javone Lawson to cap an 84-yard scoring drive.  A key play in the drive was a 27-yard completion to tight end Jacob Maxwell that moved the ball close to the red zone.

The score held until the 4:34 mark of the second quarter.  After Jevante Watson intercepted a Gautier pass and returned it 14 yards to the 50, Harry Peoples took a handoff from Broadway on a sweep around the right side, but pulled up to toss a 50-yard scoring strike to Lawson on a halfback option play to put the White ahead, 15-2.  Lawson caught the ball at the 11 and needed to put a burst on between two defenders and barely got into the corner of the end zone.

The Red ended the first half on a great note when Gautier engineered a 65-yard scoring drive in the final 1:46 of the half.  Devin Figaro made fought off a defensive back to haul in a 17-yard touchdown pass in the left corner of the end zone with 10.7 seconds left to send the teams to the intermission with White ahead 15-9.

The Red pulled to within 15-12 with 5:22 left in the third quarter when Sean Thomas intercepted a Broadway pass and returned it 15 yards to the 16.  The turnover led to a 32-yard field goal by Brett Baer..

The White came right back, using a pair of long passes to move the ball 69 yards in five plays in just 2:02.  Broadway set the drive up with a 39-yard completion to Jamal Robinson.  On the next play, Broadway rolled right and found Lawson all alone down the right sidelines for a 29-yard score, putting the White back ahead 22-12 with 3:20 left.

After going over 200 scrimmage snaps this spring without a turnover, the two offenses turned the ball over five times, three by the Red team and two by the White squad.  Jemarlous Moten, Jevante Watson and Trevence Patt each picked off passes for the White squad while Thomas made the lone interception for the Red team with safety Darius Barksdale recovering a fumble.
