LAFAYETTE, La. – The offense used a turnover free performance on Saturday to run away from the defense, 48-33, in the third scrimmage of the spring practice season.

Going into the spring, head coach Mark Hudspeth pointed to doing a better job of taking care of the football as one of the primary goals for the offense during the 15-practice season.  The unit apparently received the message, going through the 70-play scrimmage without a miscue.

“I was pleased with the performance of the offense this afternoon,” Hudspeth said.  “We have the ability to put a lot of points on the board this fall if we take care of the ball.  We've now gone over 200 snaps in the three scrimmages without a turnover.  That's a great sign.

“The offense moved the ball and made some plays.  More importantly, when they got ahead, the offense really poured on the gas and put away the win,” Hudspeth said.

Hudspeth singled out the play of junior Bradley Brown and sophomore Jamal Robinson for their performance in the scrimmage.

“Bradley and Jamal showed that they belong in the lineup,” Hudspeth said.  “We've got a veteran group of receivers returning this fall but these have proved that they are ready to play and will help to give us a deep unit this year.  They both had some quality snaps today and made the plays when the ball came their way.”

Hudspeth also was pleased with the play of sophomore transfer Terrance Broadway.  “Broadway sure didn't look at all rusty from sitting out last year,” Hudspeth said.  “He had poise in the pocket and really moved the ball well.”

Despite the loss, Hudspeth was optimistic about the play of the defense.

“We've got a lot of talent on the defense but it is just lacking some experience,” Hudspeth said.  “The cohesiveness of the unit will come with time, they have made some good progress this spring.

“What worried me today is that it is one thing to get beat, it happens.  It is another to get beat and be happy about it.  Our upper classmen and regulars from last year need to step up. . . we need to get some leaders out there who when they get beat one time, decide that they are going to make the big play the next time.

“I told the defense after the scrimmage that going into the last series of the day, that even though they were down by eight points, they still were in a position to win.  If all they had done was to stop the offense, they would have lost by two, but if they had forced a turnover, they would have won.  They can't get down on themselves because things aren't going right.  They just need to step up and make the big play, and I know that that ability will come with more practice,” Hudspeth said.

The Ragin' Cajuns have just three practices left in the spring season and will practice on Tuesday (March 27) and Friday (March 30) before taking part in the annual spring game on Saturday, March 31 at 1:00 p.m. in Cajun Field.

“This is going to be a fun event,” Hudspeth said.  “Instead of having the first offense play against the first defense, we are going to change things up.  The coaches will be getting together on Wednesday and we will hold a draft to split up the teams evenly.  Then we are going to split the teams up on Saturday and have them go through pregame meals and meetings separately so that when they take the field for the spring game, both teams will be ready to go all out to win.  It should make for a competitive atmosphere.”
