JONESBORO, Ark. – Arkansas State tallied at least 15 kills in all three sets and handed the Ragin' Cajuns volleyball team a 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-16) defeat here Friday evening at the Convocation Center.

The loss kept the Ragin' Cajuns (15-14, 6-7 Sun Belt) from sweeping the season series with the Red Wolves (17-11, 7-5 Sun Belt) who avenged a 3-1 defeat at the hands of UL back on Oct.12 at Earl K. Long Gym.

Though the Sun Belt West division title is now out of reach, the Ragin' Cajuns remain in good position to qualify for the upcoming Sun Belt Conference Tournament.

UL travels to Little Rock to meet UALR on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Jack Stephens Center and might officially be in the SBC Tournament before taking the court. Should FIU fall to Florida Atlantic on Saturday, then the Cajuns clinch their tournament berth. If not, then the next Cajuns win or next FIU defeat secures the postseason bid.

A near-miss in the opening set seemed to put the Cajuns on the wrong side of the momentum meter.

UL led 23-21 late in the opener riding a surge of momentum after an early hole. The Cajuns had erased an 11-5 deficit with a 15-6 run. A kill from Andrea Hole later provided an 18-17 lead.

The Cajuns held on to the lead until an unfortunate series of rallies following a Kelsie Hodges kill which drew ASU within a point, 23-22. A bad set by Mandi Gavin created a tie, and then consecutive attack errors gave the Red Wolves an improbable 25-23 set victory.

UL couldn't recover, hitting a match-low .114 in the second set and falling on the wrong side of a 35-21 kills advantage over the final two stanzas. ASU threw down 20 kills and hit .459 in the match clincher.

Kelly Wiesmann tallied a team-best eight kills on just 20 attempts. Both Hole and Lavinia Tataran reached seven kills.

Gavin had a team-best five blocks in addition to her 26 assists which moved her past 1,000 in a season for the second time in her career. Her nine digs tied Tataran for the team's second-highest tally in the match.

Libero Caitlyn Auxilien posted double figures in digs for the 24th time in 29 outings. Auxilien posted 10 increasing her season total to 434.

UL out-blocked ASU 9.0-2.0 on the strength of five block solos. Tataran registered two block solos.

ASU used a commanding 50-31 advantage in kills to send their 2012 senior class out victorious in their home finale. Marie Hadar led the way with 14 kills without an attack error in 17 swings (.824 hitting percentage).

Hadar proved to be the difference maker for the Red Wolves in the season's second meeting, after netting only one kill and hitting -.400 in the Earl K. Long Gym meeting on Oct. 12.

Louisiana took an early lead in the second set following a block solo by Tataran, subsequent kill and Taylor Szypulski attack error that provided a 5-4 lead.

The teams went back-and-forth for the next 17 rallies with six ties. Though they trailed most of the way, the Cajuns deficit was never higher than two points.

Leading 14-12, ASU ruined the Cajuns chances at creating a tied match by reeling off four straight points for enough cushion to withstand any potential UL rally. Two Szypulski kills and two Tataran attack errors ignited the Red Wolves run.

In the third set the Red Wolves' 20 kills were too much to overcome.

The Cajuns did their best to keep pace pulling within two points, 8-6, on a Hole kill. Kills from Hodges and Szypulski opened a four-point edge and the hosts wouldn't look back.

The Red Wolves picked up 11 of their 20 kills after UL cut the deficit to 13-9 (Blair Claypoole kill). That helped the hosts open, and ultimately maintain, a six-point cushion that swelled to nine points following the final rally.

SET POINTS: Louisiana fell to 4-3 in Sun Belt West division matches, with a 1-2 mark in the second round that began last Saturday against UL-Monroe…Blair Claypoole had a string of six straight matches in double digit kills snapped as ASU limited her to three kills on 15 attempts…UL's 31 kills marked the team's lowest amount since being held to 27 in a sweep against Georgia Tech at the Active Ankle Challenge on Sept. 7…For the fourth time in the past five outings the Cajuns posted at least nine blocks…In Sun Belt play, UL is averaging 2.01 blocks per set (100.5 over 50 sets)…UL dropped a second consecutive match for the first time since losing both matches on the WKU-MT homestand (Sept. 28-29)…The Ragin' Cajuns were swept for only the fourth time in 2012 and first time since Sept. 28 vs. Western Kentucky…On Sunday in Little Rock, the Cajuns attempt to sweep UALR for the second straight season…UL has won four of the past five meetings against the Trojans dating back to 2010.
